Microplastic-Induced Oxidative Stress on Intestinal Barrier Function in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Funded by FRGS grant)

Project Title
Microplastic-Induced Oxidative Stress on Intestinal Barrier Function in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Funded by FRGS grant)

School
School of Medical and Life Sciences

Project Description
In recent years, there has been an apparent rise in the incidence and prevalence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) across Asia, especially within urban areas and among younger age groups. Environmental elements like dietary changes and pollution exposure have been put forth as potential explanations for this trend. Microplastic contamination that exists in the environment, food and drinking water may have a big impact on how the disease develops. The study aims to investigate the potential relationship between microplastic exposure and the IBD patient severity, as well as the underlying mechanisms by which microplastics may affect IBD. The findings may have important implications for public health, by informing policies and practices that attempt to reduce the negative impacts of microplastic exposure on human health.
