English for Computer Technology Studies

Overview

Important aspects of academic writing:

  • Sentence skills with emphasis on grammar, syntax, structure, and organisation in order to improve the necessary writing skills;
  • Different genres of writing at the tertiary level such as summary, argumentative essays, research report, and directed writing;
  • Reading skills with the main objective to improve students’ analytical and critical thinking skills;
  • Reviewing articles to verify their authenticity and credibility in order to write an extended essay (e.g. research report, position paper) which analyses    and synthesises multiple sources into a coherent and well- structured writing assignment;
  • Proper referencing when using primary, secondary, and tertiary sources for writing.

On completing the course, students will be able to:

  1. Evaluate opinions and arguments presented in the text. 
  2. Discuss ICT related issues through logical development.
  3. Produce unified, orderly and coherent sentences and essays with supporting evidence.
  4. Use correct citation and referencing method in paraphrasing and summarising the work of others.
