What We Do: Energy

What is Sustainable Energy

Sustainable energy refers to the various ways of using and conserving energy that will not compromise our future’s energy resources. This includes all existing renewable energy as well as the production of safe energy that is universally available.

Focus Areas

Leadership

• Energy-star compliant assets
All desktop computers, devices and server devices purchase continue meet appropriate Energy-Star compliance standards for power consumption and support energy-conservation features (Version 6.1 effective September 10 2, 2014).
Desktop models deployed will have energy-smart saving mode setting enabled, a simple but effective way of energy-conservation. You will notice your PC going into sleep or hibernation mode after a period of inactivity (such as meetings or short discussion).

• Research Centre for Nano-Materials and Energy Technology (RCNMET), Sunway University
The Research Centre for Nano-Materials and Energy Technology supports the university’s sustainability efforts by developing nanomaterials-based new technology for sustainable energy. We are involved in the design, development, synthesis and testing of different nanomaterials that will be used to enhance various energy production and storage systems.

We are led by Distinguished Research Professor Saidur Rahman, who is ranked in the top 1% by citations for field and publication year in Web of Science and was conferred the Highly Cited Researcher Award for the last 8 years in a row. Our goal is to be a leading research centre in nanomaterials, energy efficiency and sustainable energy through innovative research, publications, product development and service to the community both locally and internationally.

Education

• Switch Off Turn Off Cool Off Campaign
The purpose of this campaign was to create awareness amongst the staff and students that a concerted effort was needed to reduce energy consumption . The launch was officiated by the Suruhanjaya Tenaga (ST) – Energy Commission of Malaysia. This initiative is part of the institution’s continuous implementation of energy management programmes to conserve energy and preserve the environment for our future generation.

In 2020, the education sector saved a total of 3,848MWh of energy through initiatives such as replacing T5 fluorescent or CFO bulbs with LEDs, installing motion sensors and installing solar panels.

Operations

• Conference: Green Finance for Energy Security and Sustainable Development
The Jeffrey Sachs Center on Sustainable Development and the Asian Development Bank Institute jointly organised a full-day conference on ‘Green Finance for Energy Security and Sustainable Development’ at Sunway University. Issues surrounding green financing were addressed followed by solutions. More on this event can be found here.

• South-East Asian Network @ Nano-Materials and Energy Storage (SEANet@NanoES)
The South-East Asian Network @ Nano-Materials and Energy Storage (SEANet@NanoES) represents a group of researchers and institutions with a collaborative interest in research and teaching activities. The network aims to promote the research and teaching in the area of nanomaterials and its application in energy storage in South-East Asian Countries. The network is involved in niche area of research and teaching in nanomaterials and energy storage. Research themes focus on clean and affordable energy research fulfilling SDG 7, synthesis of emerging nanomaterials and applications of nanomaterials in thermal and electrical energy storage. Through this network, Sunway University aims to create a strong, long-term collaborative research network with partner academic institutions in South East Asian countries.

In August 2022 Sunway University organised a NanoES seminar with Professor Saidur Rahman as the chairman of the event. In this seminar, the Research Centre for Nano-Materials and Energy Technology (RCNMET), School of Engineering and Technology, Sunway University cordially invited the researchers, students and academicians for a 2-day virtual 2nd Seminar on Nanomaterials and Energy Storage 2022 (NanoES2022).

In these 2 days, different topics of nanomaterials and energy storage were discussed. The seminar is organized within the framework of the International Research Network Grant Scheme 2.0 (IRNGS2.0). The speakers are leading experts in the field of nanomaterials and energy storage from the UK, South Korea, Sweden, Thailand, India, Philippines, and Malaysia.
