This course aims to help students who are pursuing a degree in Biotechnology to improve their critical reading and writing skills which will enable them to distinguish between facts and opinions and between referential and emotive language as well as to exclude opinions and emotive language from scientific writing.  However, other language skills including grammar and vocabulary will also be dealt with.

The course will address three major areas which are reading for information and research, in which students will have to apply their critical thinking and critical reading skills, writing various types of scientific prose and methods of presenting scientific data clearly as well as systematically.

On completing the course, students will be able to:

1. Analyse and critically evaluate opinions and arguments presented in text forms to determine merit, accuracy and currency. 
2. Write unified, orderly and coherent essays in a variety of genres that demonstrate reader consideration and expectation in use of language and structure. 
3. Write to present their position on specific issues through logical development of arguments and use of supporting evidence. 
4. Avoid plagiarism through accurate APA style citations and referencing as well as paraphrase, summarise and quote the work of others correctly.
