DEMO: the Mosquito Monitor for Dengue in the ASEAN

Dengue surveillance across ASEAN largely works backwards. Cases are counted after people fall ill, which means public health systems respond to outbreaks already underway rather than to the conditions that produce them.

This session will demonstrate an alternative. The mosquito monitor is a live surveillance device that classifies mosquitoes by genus, sex and age while streaming real-time weather data from the same location. Rather than counting infections, it tracks the vector and the climate conditions that drive transmission, continuously and at source.

The mosquito monitor sits within a wider effort to build a regional Dengue Observatory for ASEAN. The session opens with a review of dengue across the region from the perspectives of planetary health and regional and local surveillance, before showcasing the device itself. Data from the monitor streams into the observatory, where it informs predictive modelling for disease monitoring, surveillance and forecasting.

Scaling these efforts becomes a key factor: how continuous vector and climate surveillance can support early warning and timely public health action, and what sustainable deployment across ASEAN would involve.
