Open Space #2: How Did Yasmin Ahmad Do It?
Date: Friday 26 June 2026
Time: 3:00-7:00pm
Venue: Recital Hall, Sunway Square, Faculty of Arts & Social Science (FASS), Sunway University
The 2nd Open Space series - presented by the Department of Film & Theatre - will feature a discussion on the works and life of late Malaysian film director Yasmin Ahmad by Dr. Adil Johan from Universiti Malaya and Jovian Lee from Persatuan Yasmin Ahmad, moderated by FASS' own Lecturer - filmmaker and theatremaker Andy Gomes - and curated by Senior Lecturer Azmyl Yunor
The discussion will be followed by a screening of Yasmin Ahmad's classic award-winning film 'Sepet' (2005) - an important film that heralded the Malaysian New Wave Cinema entrance into the broader public sphere as a box-office and critical hit. It remains a film that aptly represents multicultural Malaysia in all its glory and the late Yasmin Ahmad's artistic hallmark.
The Open Space series encourage interdisciplinary discussion and engagement for Sunway-U's FASS staff, students and interested members of the public about the creative industry and creative art practices where industry practitioners, artists, and academic faculty are able to share their expertise, experience and knowledge in an open forum or workshop setting. This series supports two of FASS' pillars of Interdisciplinarity and Proficiency in the professional and academic field of the creative arts and industries.
