Journal of Contract Law Conference
The Centre for Commercial Law and Justice hosted the internationally renowned Journal of Contract Law Conference 2017 at Sunway University. The conference featured distinguished speakers in the area of contract and commercial law practice, including Justice Andrew Phang of the Supreme Court of Singapore, Emeritus Professor John Carter from the University of Sydney, and former High Court judge Tan Sri Dr Visu Sinnadurai.
The conference highlighted the life and work of Professor John Carter, with a presentation by Justice Phang and Associate Professor Goh Yihan from Singapore Management University.
This was followed by Wayne Courtney, an associate professor at the National University of Singapore, who spoke about indemnities and guarantees under the Malaysian Contracts Act with insights from other commonwealth countries.
Professor Michael Furmston from Sunway University Business School (SUBS) focused on the 2016 English Supreme Court decision in the case of Patel v Mirza and the implications in terms of the recognition of illegal contracts in England.
Professor Carter’s presentation focused on the drafting of termination clauses in today’s commercial environment and their legal significance, drawing on case laws from Australia, England and Malaysia.
Glynn Cooper, a partner at Australia’s Herbert Smith Freehills, then spoke about the interpretation of contracts from a finance and accounting perspective. The conference was received well by the audience, who were lawyers and legal professionals from industry and academia.
This conference is the first of many law conferences to be hosted by the Centre of Commercial Law and Justice as a precedent has now been set
