Sunway University School of American Education Celebrates U.S. Independence Day
A major milestone was reached by the Sunway University Centre for American Education on the 26th of June 2023. Sunway University launched the new School of American Education (SAE). This was indeed a proud moment for the Sunway community. The centre's history can be traced back to the establishment of the American Degree Transfer Program in 1987. The program has successfully facilitated the transfer of more than 3,000 students to a number of reputable institutions in the United States and other countries. Universities in the US include Cornell University, The University of Michigan Ann Arbor, Purdue University, Western Michigan University, Iowa State University, Arizona State University and many others. The new school will be developing home-grown American education programs which will give future students the option of completing an American degree in Malaysia, thereby alleviating financial worries to some extent. Students who wish to transfer to universities in the US and other countries will still be able to do so.
The highlight of the day was the guest of honour. His Excellency, Mr. Brian D. McFeeters, US Ambassador to Malaysia was kind enough to take time from his busy schedule to join in helping to launch the school. His speech expressed a keen interest by the US Embassy in wanting to work more closely with Sunway University. He was very enthusiastic about the various opportunities for collaboration in a multitude of areas. Speeches were also given the CEO of Sunway University, Datuk Dr. Elizabeth Lee and the President of Sunway University, Prof. Dr. Sibrandes Poppema, both of whom highlighted Sunway University's long and cordial relationship with the US. The event concluded with a speech from the new Dean of the School of American Education, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sim Tze Ying who thanked all the guests, but more importantly stressed the dream of equity and inclusivity which is at the heart of the School of American Education.
