This year, Sunway University’s School of American Education held its inaugural Fall Awards Ceremony as a school on Thanksgiving Day itself. We are grateful to celebrate this joyous occasion with the students, parents, their loved ones, lecturers and SAE staff.
We celebrated the achievement of students who have completed the first half of their degree at Sunway University and are transferring in Spring 2024 to various U.S. universities such as the Pennsylvania State University, Arizona State University, California State University – Sacramento, Messiah University (Pennsylvania), University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and others. There are students who are also transferring to Grant Macewan University (Canada) and Concordia University (Canada). Some students such as Regan Tan (Messiah University Provost, Academic and Internationals scholarships of USD$21,500), Ethan Zen (Global Laureate Scholarship of USD$15,000), Yap Ying (Global Ambassador Scholarship of USD$10,000), Iqsha Priya Iswaraan (Transfer University Scholarship of USD$7,250), Tan Ie Ling (Transfer GDS Scholarship of USD$4,000), and others were awarded scholarships from their respective American universities.
The welcome speech was given by the Dean of SAE, Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. –ING Sim. Dr. Sim encouraged transferring students to bring along the values of Sunway, which are humility, integrity and excellence. Next, Professor Sibrandes Poppema, President of Sunway University gave his speech. Prof. Poppema addressed the transferring students of how studying overseas can be quite different and quite the same at the same time. He encouraged students that to any problem, there is often more than one solution so keep your mind open and learn that solutions are not necessarily better or worse, just different. He also advised students to take a conscious action in everything they do for the advancement of planetary health and in line with the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) since there is only one planet earth. Another VIP there was Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) Prof. Chai Lay Ching.
At the ceremony, we had our SAE alumni, Edmond Kwan (is now completing his music degree in the School of Arts, Sunway University) performed two songs, one of which was a song he wrote and we got to hear it first since it was only debuting the next day. Edmond has his own channels at Spotify & Apple Music: @Lnts.
At Sunway University, SAE students are equipped with the skills required to perform well academically and in the real world. They are exposed to a flexible and adaptable education system, which includes interactive and creative learning through hands-on practical assignments, various blended learning forums, internship, presentations and more. Students also gain community and industry experiences through their participation in extra-curricular activities.
The American Degree Transfer Program has been developed specifically to allow students to study for the first part of their American degree at Sunway University. The program has been designed in consultation with American universities to ensure students can transfer seamlessly to the U.S. to complete their studies.
