Merdeka 2025: Sunway University's President Featured in BusinessToday
In conjunction with Malaysia’s 68th National Day, BusinessToday invited leaders across industries to share their reflections on the meaning of Merdeka. Among those featured was Professor Sibrandes Poppema, President and Vice-Chancellor of Sunway University.
This year’s Merdeka theme, “Malaysia Madani: Rakyat Disantuni”, serves as a reminder of the nation’s enduring values of compassion, unity, and shared identity. It is a day that honours the sacrifices of the past while calling on Malaysians to build a fairer and more inclusive future together.
Reflecting on the occasion, Professor Poppema shared his perspective as an international leader who has made Malaysia his home:
“As a Dutchman living in Malaysia, it is a clear reminder of the end of colonial rule, a source of pride in what Malaysia has already achieved, and an inspiration for what the future may bring.”
He also conveyed his Merdeka message to the Sunway community and Malaysians at large:
“Please celebrate Merdeka as a moment to reflect on and rejoice in Malaysia as a unique multicultural society.”
