Stepping into the Shoes of a Nurse: SMK Assunta Students Experience Nursing Firsthand
On the 17th of June 2025, School of Nursing had the privilege of hosting 40 students from SMK Assunta at our Nursing Skills Lab. This visit aimed to provide the students with a first-hand experience of the nursing profession and introduce them to some basic nursing skills. Through a series of engaging activities, the students were able to gain insight into the role of nurses and participate in hands-on activities that allowed them to feel what it’s like to be a nurse.
The session began with a video presentation on the role of nurses in healthcare. The video offered an overview of the various responsibilities’ nurses carry, including patient care, collaboration with other healthcare professionals, and their essential role in ensuring patient comfort and safety. The presentation helped the students understand the importance of nurses in the healthcare system and the impact they have on patient care.
After the presentation, the students took part in practical activities to gain hands-on experience. The first activity involved oxygen therapy, where the students were introduced to the equipment used in administering oxygen to patients. They were guided through the steps of setting up oxygen masks and were educated on the importance of oxygen therapy in treating patients with respiratory conditions. This session allowed the students to practice the procedures and gain a deeper understanding of this vital aspect of nursing care.
Next, the students learned bed making techniques, an essential skill for nurses. They were shown how to prepare hospital beds to ensure patient comfort and prevent complications such as pressure sores. The students actively participated in making the beds, and they learned how small actions, like bed making, contribute significantly to patient care and well-being.
To conclude the visit, we organized a Kahoot quiz to reinforce the knowledge shared during the session. The quiz covered topics from the video presentation and the practical activities, providing a fun and interactive way for the students to test what they had learned. It was an enjoyable experience that fostered a competitive spirit and encouraged the students to engage actively with the material.
Throughout the day, the students were highly engaged, and it was clear that they enjoyed the interactive nature of the activities. Their enthusiasm and curiosity about the nursing profession were evident as they asked insightful questions and showed great interest in the practical tasks. The visit provided them with a unique opportunity to experience some of the core responsibilities of a nurse, and many expressed their newfound appreciation for the profession.
In summary, today’s visit was a resounding success. It allowed the students from SMK Assunta to gain a deeper understanding of the nursing profession while also providing them with practical knowledge that could inspire them to pursue a future in healthcare. We look forward to more such interactions and hope that this experience has sparked a lasting interest in nursing among these students
