From Sunway to the Netherlands: Shobna Thuraisingam’s Research Journey

Sunway University is proud to highlight the academic journey of Ms Shobna Thuraisingam, an alumna who began her scientific path at the institution and is now pursuing her PhD at Universitair Medisch Centrum Groningen (UMCG) in the Netherlands.

Her doctoral research explores the protective effects of red algae against particulate matter-induced pro-inflammatory responses in airway epithelial cells, a timely and significant contribution to the field of respiratory health.

Recent Highlights Include:

  • Book Chapter Accepted (March 2025):
    “Therapeutic Potential of Algal Nutraceuticals in Airway Diseases: Challenges and Future Direction”

  • Ongoing Projects:
    A review paper and SDG-related publication currently in progress.

  • Research Techniques:
    Advancing methodologies in cigarette smoke extraction, cell exposure, and inflammatory gene expression.

  • Conference Presentation:
    Scheduled to present her work at the Dutch Lung Conference 2025 in Amsterdam.

  • Professional Engagements:
    Active member of both the Netherlands Respiratory Society and the European Respiratory Society.
