Sunway University Creative Idaho Potato Culinary Challenge 2025
In collaboration with the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, the Idaho Potato Commission Asia successfully hosted the Creative Idaho Potato Culinary Challenge 2025.
A total of 45 participants were rigorously selected from 70 submissions. Each participant prepared a Malaysian favourite dish using Idaho Potatoes in creative and refined ways, celebrating Malaysia's unique fusion of flavour, culture, and culinary excellence.
We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to Mr Ross Johnson, Mr Kenneth Wee, Mr Brian Jones, and Mr Justin Jones from Idaho Potato Commission and Sun Valley Potatoes Inc, as well as our esteemed panel of judges - Chef Philip Chui, Chef Zhi Sheng Jong, Chef Muhd Muhammad Ikhwan Bin Mustafar, Chef Desmond Loo, Chef Nur Fadillah Saidin and Ms Vijaya Arumugam. Without your support, trust, and expertise, this event would not have been possible. Not to forget, we are also incredibly proud of all the participants for putting their all into their creations and wowing the judges with their creativity and artistry.
The photos and recipes will be published in a cookbook on Malaysian Heritage Cuisine by Idaho Potatoes and Sunway University Press in 2026, as part of the Visit Malaysia 2026 initiative. This event also aligns with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 11, particularly SDG 11.4, which emphasises the importance of promoting sustainable cities and preserving cultural heritage.
Through this initiative, we not only celebrate Malaysia’s diverse culinary identity, but also contribute to the preservation and documentation of traditional dishes for future generations — reinforcing the role of food in cultural sustainability and global awareness.
