Welfare Wave: A Journey of Healing, Kindness, and Connection
Throughout the month of May 2025, the Student Relations Department of the Sunway University Student Council (SUSC) successfully launched Welfare Wave, a month-long campaign dedicated to fostering a supportive and inclusive campus environment. By dedicating each week to a specific theme, the initiative encouraged open conversations around mental health, self-love, and emotional resilience, creating a meaningful impact within the Sunway student community.
The campaign kicked off with the Cups of Kindness initiative, which served as a warm introduction to Welfare Month. By collaborating with Tea Thambi to distribute free tea and coffee the council created a meaningful opportunity for students to connect with SUSC members and each other. This initiative was highly effective in growing our community engagement and providing a platform for students and staff alike to feel seen and supported. The positive response underscored the importance of simple, tangible acts of service in strengthening peer connections.
Creative expression took center stage with the Arts for Healing sessions hosted at the Rooftop Terrace. This initiative allowed students to harness the power of art as a tool to relieve stress and ease anxiety. The event saw high engagement, with the variety of activities and multiple time slots allowing a wide audience to participate. The venue provided the perfect backdrop for students to unwind, express themselves creatively, and build new friendships in a relaxed, therapeutic setting.
To address deeper mental health topics, the Suicide Prevention Campaign utilized strategically placed Survey Boards and informative social media content to destigmatize conversations around suicide and self-harm. The boards, featuring a mix of awareness-building questions and encouragement notes, saw high traffic and allowed students to engage with the topic in a safe, visible way. This was complemented by the Let’s Talk Mental Health session, which featured an engaging speaker who provided valuable coping strategies for burnout and self-care.
As Welfare Wave 2025 concludes, the success of the campaign reaffirms SUSC’s commitment to prioritising the mental health of every Sunway student and ensuring that no one walks their journey alone.
