Back2School 2026: Sunway University helps 1200 students in Desa Mentari
Sunway University reinforced its commitment to community development through the Back2School 2026 initiative in Desa Mentari, where 1,200 students from B40 families received school uniforms and essential learning supplies to help them start the academic year with confidence. More than a one-off donation, the programme reflects a long-term effort to support education as a pathway to social mobility and sustainable change.
Sunway University President Professor Sibrandes Poppema shared that the initiative also aims to nurture a sense of social responsibility among university students, while encouraging other higher education institutions to play a more active role in supporting surrounding communities. He noted that if more universities adopted similar approaches, the collective impact could be transformative.
Highlighting the broader vision, Professor Mahendhiran Nair described education as a powerful catalyst capable of uplifting entire families, while Desa Mentari MADANI Community Chair Mohd Zaini Saleh emphasised that Back2School stands out for its inclusive, family-wide approach. Together with Yayasan Jeffrey Cheah, the programme underscores how universities can be meaningful partners in building more resilient and inclusive communities.
