The School of Psychology had the opportunity to host Dr Valerie Tan, clinical psychologist from the University of Otago for a guest lecture on Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD). Dr Tan’s lecture explored how C-PTSD differs from traditional PTSD, particularly in individuals who have experienced prolonged or repeated trauma, often occurring within relationships or environments where escape was difficult. The discussion highlighted how such experiences can shape emotional regulation, self-perception, and interpersonal functioning over time.
The talk also addressed the growing recognition of C-PTSD within clinical psychology, Students were particularly engaged in the discussion on how understanding complex trauma can inform more effective support for individuals who have lived through chronic adversity.
