How Lancaster and Sunway’s Joint Institute Is Reshaping Sustainable Cities

As rapid urbanisation and climate pressures challenge municipalities worldwide, the Future Cities Research Institute (FCRI)—a joint initiative between the UK’s Lancaster University and Malaysia’s Sunway University—is establishing a scalable blueprint for transnational academic collaboration. Established in 2019, the platform extends the two institutions' long-standing partnership beyond teaching into direct research, innovation, and community impact.

Designed to bridge urban planning and environmental challenges across the Global North and Global South, FCRI addresses systemic issues through four primary pillars: Digital, Sustainable, Healthy, and Resilient Cities.

A Pathway from Academia to Action

Rather than restricting research to theoretical publications, FCRI delivers its programs through three practical pathways aimed at driving systemic policy and behavioural changes:

  • Sustainability-Focused Education: Utilising city-scale living laboratories to build systems thinking among researchers and students addressing complex urban challenges.

  • Mission-Oriented Research: Uniting interdisciplinary academics to build evidence-based solutions for climate resilience and equitable development.

  • Deep Engagement: Connecting higher education institutions directly with government bodies, industry leaders, and local communities to convert research into actionable policy and practice.

Real-World On-the-Ground Impact

The institute’s practical focus is already delivering measurable outcomes across communities and ecosystems in Southeast Asia:

  • Plastic Waste Reduction: Through the PPiPL Pilot Project Malaysia, researchers work alongside eight waste-industry partners in Selangor to advance sustainable packaging solutions.

  • Healthcare & Youth Support: A dedicated Mobile Community Clinic initiative has delivered essential educational and healthcare support to more than 2,400 children and young individuals.

  • Building Decarbonization: FCRI utilises a designated Net Zero Building at Sunway University as a live laboratory to test decarbonization strategies and monitor building performance.

  • Water Security: The institute’s South Quay Lake initiative treats and delivers daily clean water to over 51,500 local residents.

International Acclaim at PIEoneer Awards 2026

The model's success in driving tangible societal benefits was recently recognized on the global stage. Marking 20 years of collaborative partnership between Sunway and Lancaster, FCRI was awarded the Sustainability International Impact Award at the PIEoneer Awards 2026.

The accolades reaffirm that transnational educational partnerships can move beyond degree awarding to become vital hubs for solving global environmental and social challenges.
