Official Book Launch: Combatting Modern Slavery: A Global Perspective (Springer)
Sunway University’s Centre for Commercial Law and Justice (CCLJ), Sunway Business School, officially launched Combatting Modern Slavery: A Global Perspective, published by Springer Nature, on 28 April 2026 at the Recital Hall, Sunway University @ Sunway Square.
With more than 100 attendees from the legal profession, industry, and public and private universities, the launch brought together academics, legal professionals, policymakers and members of the public for an important conversation on modern slavery and the challenges involved in addressing one of today’s most pressing human rights issues.
Edited by Dr Priya Sharma, Dr Adnan Trakic and Dr Hanifah Haydar Ali Tajuddin, the book brings together contributions from authors across different jurisdictions and areas of expertise. It offers a multi-stakeholder perspective on the legal, institutional and practical challenges surrounding modern slavery, while exploring different approaches to strengthening responses to exploitation and protecting those most vulnerable.
A highlight of the event was the keynote address by Tun Dato’ Seri Arifin bin Zakaria, whose reflections focused on the importance of effective legal frameworks, institutional responsibility and collective action in protecting human dignity and advancing justice.
The launch was also honoured by the presence of Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, who presented the foreword to the book. Her participation highlighted the importance of continued dialogue and collaboration in addressing complex issues of human rights and social justice.
The launch also featured a timely and engaging panel discussion, moderated by Dr Priya Sharma, bringing together different perspectives on the realities of modern slavery and the challenges faced by those working to address it. Sunway University extends its appreciation to the panellists, Norsuzana, Zander Lim, Dr Elsa Satkunasingam, Adrian Pereira and Dr Nagiah Ramasamy, for contributing to a meaningful discussion and helping bring greater attention to the realities behind these issues.
The event also provided an opportunity to acknowledge the many authors who contributed to the publication and those who joined the launch. Their research and insights form an important part of the book’s contribution to ongoing conversations around modern slavery, human rights and justice.
For CCLJ, the publication and its launch reflect the Centre’s interest in bringing legal scholarship into conversation with real-world challenges. It also creates a platform for continued research, discussion and engagement on issues of law, human rights and justice.
