Student Council Town Hall 2.0: Bringing Student Voices Forward

On 20 May 2026, the Sunway University Student Council (SUSC), together with the Sunway College Student Council (SCC), held Student Council Town Hall 2.0 at JC1, Sunway University, continuing its commitment to strengthening communication between students, the Student Councils and university management.

The second Town Hall of the term focused on three key areas: updates from recent discussions with management, a recap of the councils’ progress and achievements, and an open Q&A for students to raise their concerns directly.

What’s Been Raised to Management?

A key focus of Town Hall 2.0 was updating students on concerns that had previously been raised and the progress made following discussions with management.

Among the matters highlighted was the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in academic work. Following student concerns regarding unclear AI usage guidelines, management clarified that AI detection tools such as Turnitin are used as an academic integrity check rather than definitive proof of AI usage. Longer-term efforts are also underway through the Centre for Academic Development and the AI in Education Committee to guide the responsible use of AI in teaching, learning and assessment.

Campus facilities were another major area of discussion. Updates were shared regarding BRT waiting times, the Sunway MyCampus App and campus Wi-Fi. Concerns surrounding BRT congestion had been escalated to the relevant external parties, while improvements to the MyCampus App had begun following feedback on its interface and navigation. IT Services had also received approval for a major Wi-Fi upgrade aimed at improving campus coverage.

For international students, the council provided updates on concerns surrounding visa renewal delays and working opportunities. Initiatives such as the Know Your Visa session and the proposed International Student Ambassador Programme were highlighted as ongoing efforts to provide greater clarity and explore more opportunities for the international student community.

Students Asked, the Councils Responded

The Town Hall then opened the floor to students through Padlet and a live Q&A, allowing students to directly raise questions to SUSC and SCC representatives.

The discussion reflected many of the everyday concerns faced by students, ranging from academic experiences and campus facilities to student representation, transparency and opportunities for clubs and societies.

Students raised concerns about shortened lecture hours, timetable arrangements and elective availability, as well as practical campus issues such as study spaces, power sockets, washroom maintenance, parking and facilities at Sunway Square.

Keeping Students in the Loop

Alongside the Town Hall, SUSC and SCC introduced the Student Council Town Hall Booklet, an initiative designed to provide students with clearer updates on concerns raised during previous Town Halls, outcomes from management discussions and subsequent follow-up actions.

As the current term continues, SUSC remains committed to ensuring that student concerns do not end at the point of feedback. Through continued engagement with students, university management and relevant stakeholders, the council will continue to raise, follow up and communicate on matters that affect the Sunway student experience.
