Sunway University advances to 47th in Asia, with comprehensive gains across eight ranking indicators
Sunway University has climbed to 47th in the QS Asia University Rankings 2027, advancing eight places from the previous edition and continuing its upward trajectory. Its entry into Asia’s Top 50 marks another milestone in a journey defined by academic ambition, international engagement and a commitment to serving society.
The latest result builds on successive advances from 74th in 2025 to 55th in 2026 and now 47th in 2027; a climb of 27 places over two years. The longer-term trajectory is equally significant: Sunway has progressed from the 261–270 band in the 2018 edition to its current position among the region’s leading universities. The QS Asia University Rankings 2027 assessed 1,720 institutions across the region, including 190 new entrants. Competition remained intense, with 420 universities improving their positions while 930 recorded a decline.
This year’s achievement is accompanied by improved positions across eight ranking indicators, spanning international engagement, research citation impact, academic reputation and the faculty-to-student ratio.
International engagement stands out as a particular strength. Sunway achieved scores above 96 out of 100 across all five indicators within QS’s Global Engagement category, covering international students, international faculty, international research networks, and inbound and outbound student exchange. The University ranked 50th in Asia for International Student Ratio and 59th for International Faculty Ratio, with scores of 99.8 and 99.6 respectively.
Its International Research Network ranking rose 45 places, achieving a score of 98.2. This indicator assesses the breadth of international research partnerships, highlighting an important dimension of Sunway’s development as a university that connects expertise across borders.
Research citation impact also advanced. Sunway climbed 26 places for Citations per Paper, with a score of 92.7. The underlying data recorded 17.1 normalised citations per paper, compared with a regional median of 9.3. This result points to the reach of Sunway’s research within the scholarly community and complements its progress in international research collaboration.
Student mobility recorded further gains. Sunway’s largest improvement in indicator rank was in Outbound Exchange Students, rising 67 places, while Inbound Exchange Students improved 12 places. These indicators reflect participation in international exchange programmes, an important avenue for students to encounter different perspectives, develop intercultural understanding and build international connections.
The University also advanced 18 places for Academic Reputation, reflecting stronger standing in QS’s survey of academics. Its Faculty Student Ratio ranking improved 15 places, an indicator of the academic resources available to support teaching and learning.
Together, these results recognise the contributions of Sunway’s academic and professional staff, students, alumni and partners. They also provide renewed impetus for the University’s continued development.
As a mission-driven Fifth-Generation University, Sunway remains focused on connecting education, research and innovation with the needs of society. Its international relationships and academic capabilities support a wider ambition: nurturing graduates who can contribute meaningfully to their communities and advancing knowledge that benefits people and the planet.
Guided by the belief in “doing well by doing good,” Sunway approaches each milestone with a continuing responsibility to translate institutional progress into meaningful impact.
The rise continues. The mission grows stronger.
