Sunway University Hosts KPUM Malaysian Moot Competition Rounds
Sunway University was proud to support the next generation of aspiring lawyers as a Strategic Partner of the United Kingdom & Eire Malaysian Law Students’ Union (KPUM) for the KPUM Malaysian Moot Competition, held on 20 and 21 June 2026 in collaboration with Lee Hishammuddin Allen & Gledhill (LHAG).
As part of the competition, Sunway University’s Centre for Commercial Law and Justice (CCLJ) hosted the preliminary and quarter-final rounds, welcoming law students for a challenging and engaging showcase of advocacy and legal reasoning.
The competition brought together aspiring young lawyers who had the opportunity to put their legal knowledge into practice, working through complex arguments and responding to questions under pressure. For the participants, the moot was not only a test of their legal knowledge, but also an opportunity to develop the confidence and composure needed in legal practice.
Opening the moot rounds, Dr Priya Sharma, Associate Professor and Head of the Centre for Commercial Law and Justice at Sunway University, reflected on the enduring appeal of advocacy and the important role that mooting plays in developing future lawyers.
The rounds were marked by thoughtful arguments, challenging questions and impressive performances from the participating teams. It was particularly encouraging to see students thinking critically, responding to questions dynamically and advocating their positions with confidence and conviction.
Mooting is about more than knowing the law. It requires students to think clearly, communicate effectively, respond to unexpected questions and make persuasive arguments under pressure. These are skills that extend well beyond the competition and are valuable throughout a legal career.
For CCLJ, opportunities such as the KPUM Malaysian Moot Competition reflect the importance of learning beyond the classroom which gives students the chance to put legal knowledge into practice, engage with the profession and learn alongside their peers.
The competition also highlighted the value of collaboration between student organisations, universities and the legal profession in creating meaningful opportunities for the next generation of lawyers.
