Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Scope 1 & 2 (Sunway University)

Sunway Uni Solar Panels

At Sunway University, we are committed to environmental responsibility and transparency. In line with our sustainability goals, we have started tracking and reporting our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for Scope 1 and Scope 2, as defined by the GHG Protocol.

Scope 1: Direct Emissions from University-Owned Vehicles

Scope 1 emissions refer to direct GHG emissions from sources that are owned or controlled by the university. For Sunway University, this includes emissions from fuel consumption by university-owned vehicles.

The Facilities and Services Department manages all university vehicle bookings and operations. Fuel usage data is collected throughout the year, allowing us to calculate the corresponding carbon emissions using standard emission factors.

Key Source: University fleet (petrol/diesel usage)
Department in Charge: Facilities and Services Department

Emissions are calculated based on the volume of fuel consumed annually, aligned with the emission factors recommended by internationally recognized guidelines.

Scope 2: Indirect Emissions from Purchased Electricity

Scope 2 emissions refer to indirect GHG emissions associated with the purchase of electricity used across campus facilities. These emissions occur at the power plants generating the electricity consumed by the university.

Electricity usage across all university buildings is tracked and managed by the Facilities and Services Department. Monthly electricity bills are consolidated and analyzed to determine the total kilowatt-hour (kWh) usage. The emissions are then calculated using the latest electricity emission factors provided by the Malaysian government or national utility provider.

Key Source: Purchased electricity (grid-supplied)
Department in Charge: Facilities and Services Department

The emissions reported under Scope 2 reflect our energy footprint and help us plan strategies to improve energy efficiency and reduce our carbon impact.

Commitment to Climate Action

Monitoring and reporting Scope 1 and 2 emissions is part of Sunway University’s broader commitment to sustainability. These insights enable us to better understand our environmental impact and to take informed steps toward reducing our carbon footprint through better energy management, renewable energy adoption, and more sustainable transportation options.

We aim to improve our GHG accounting practices and expand reporting in future years, as part of our journey towards carbon neutrality and climate leadership in higher education.
