In January 2026, Sunway University welcomed 43 young leaders from 11 countries through the ASEAN Youth Peacebuilders Programme (AYPP), a 12-day residential programme focusing on positive peace, climate action, social inclusion, and mental health resilience.

As part of the programme, the Sunway Desa Mentari Community Development Programme (SDMCDP) organised a community engagement visit to Desa Mentari, led by Prof. Mahendhiran Nair. The visit provided participants with the opportunity to interact directly with youths from the Desa Mentari community and gain deeper insights into issues surrounding inequality, marginalisation, and community development.

During the session, 11 youths from Desa Mentari actively participated in discussions and exchanges with the international delegates. The interaction created a positive and welcoming environment where ideas, perspectives, and lived experiences could be shared openly and meaningfully.

The engagement not only allowed AYPP participants to strengthen their understanding of peacebuilding and social cohesion at the community level, but also provided the youths from Desa Mentari with valuable exposure to regional perspectives and intercultural exchange.

The programme reflects Sunway University’s continued commitment towards empowering communities, promoting inclusive development, and nurturing future leaders who champion peace, sustainability, and social responsibility.

Through initiatives such as SDMCDP and AYPP, meaningful collaborations continue to create opportunities for learning, dialogue, and positive social impact across communities and borders.
