Respect Campaign: Inclusivity

The Sunway University Student Council’s Student Relation Department recently embarked on a heartwarming outreach initiative with ORKIDS, an organization dedicated to supporting children with special needs. This visit was more than just a community service project—it was a deeply moving opportunity to step outside the campus bubble and build genuine, inclusive bridges through the universal languages of play and compassion.

The day kicked off with high energy as volunteers and the incredible kids of ORKIDS grabbed their racquets for friendly, spirited matches of badminton. The rallies were filled with cheers, encouragement, and plenty of high-fives, instantly setting a warm and welcoming tone.

To keep the momentum going, everyone gathered into a large circle for a lively game of "hot potato." The fast-paced passing, suspense, and erupting laughter served as the perfect icebreaker, dissolving any initial shyness and creating an atmosphere of pure, unfiltered joy.

Transitioning from active games to creative expression, the children were then invited to channel their inner architects and artists. Grouped alongside volunteers, they were given paper and markers and tasked with designing their very own dream café. This collaborative activity provided a beautiful glimpse into the vibrant imaginations of these differently-abled children. It sparked wonderful, engaging conversations as they sketched out their ideas, proudly explaining their colorful menus and unique café concepts to the volunteers, proving that creativity knows no bounds.

The visit culminated in a thrilling, laughter-filled round of musical chairs, bringing an energetic and joyful end to the day's activities. To cap off the meaningful visit, the volunteers had the privilege of serving a warm lunch that our team prepared for the children and staff. Sitting down to share this homemade meal allowed for quiet moments of bonding, smiles, and full hearts.

Beyond the games and drawings, this visit to ORKIDS was a profound reminder of the impact that time, presence, and simple moments of shared happiness can have. It stands as a testament to the power of inclusive community engagement, leaving both the children and the student volunteers with cherished memories, mutual respect, and a renewed sense of purpose. The day was not just about volunteering; it was about connecting, celebrating different abilities, and leaving with hearts a little fuller than before.
