In March 2026, Sunway University, through the Sunway Desa Mentari Community Development Programme (SDMCDP), partnered with Seamaster Paint to undertake a community painting project aimed at revitalising the shared spaces of Block 9, Desa Mentari.

Initiated by the Faculty of Engineering and Technology and supported by the SDMCDP team, the collaboration brought together students, staff, and industry professionals with a shared commitment to improving the living environment of the community while creating meaningful learning opportunities for students. The project was undertaken as part of Sunway University’s compulsory Community Service for Planetary Health subject, providing students with an opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills in a real-world community setting. The initiative focused on refreshing the lobby areas within Block 9, transforming worn and ageing surfaces into brighter, cleaner, and more welcoming environments.

As part of the project, Seamaster Paint provided in-kind sponsorship in the form of painting materials and technical expertise. Prior to the painting activities, students participated in a hands-on training session conducted by Seamaster’s technical specialists, where they learned the complete painting process, including workspace preparation, surface treatment, application techniques, finishing works, and safety practices.

A total of 80 students and five staff members took part in the project, contributing their time and effort to repainting the lobby walls of the residential block. Beyond enhancing the physical appearance of the building, the initiative provided students with valuable experiential learning opportunities through their community service engagement. Students were able to develop teamwork, problem-solving, project management, and community engagement competencies while contributing to a meaningful social cause.

The project delivered tangible benefits to the residents of Desa Mentari. Refreshed lobby spaces contributed to a cleaner and more pleasant living environment, while improved visibility in common areas supported safety and security. The revitalised surroundings also fostered a greater sense of pride and ownership among residents and contributed positively to community well-being.

The initiative aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). Through collaboration between academia, industry, and the local community, the project demonstrates how collective action can create meaningful and sustainable impact.

Sunway University extends its sincere appreciation to Seamaster Paint for its generous support and partnership in making this initiative possible. The project serves as a testament to the value of industry-academia-community collaboration in creating sustainable impact, while demonstrating how experiential learning through the University’s Community Service programme can empower students to contribute meaningfully to community development.
