Sunway University and CityUHK Partner to Advance Research, Innovation, and Global Education
Sunway University hosted a high-level executive delegation from the City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) at its Kuala Lumpur campus on 12 August 2026 to establish strategic international partnerships across education, research, and sustainability.
Led by Council Chairman Prof. Michael Ngai and Acting President Prof. Chun-Sing Lee, the CityUHK delegation met with Sunway University leadership—including President Prof. Sibrandes Poppema, Provost Prof. Abhi Veerakumarasivam, and Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof. Chai Lay-Ching—to align institutional priorities.
Key Strategic Focus Areas
Academic & Research Partnerships: Both institutions explored frameworks for joint PhD supervision programmes, student and faculty mobility, joint conferences, and research collaborations across engineering, business, health sciences, and digital humanities.
Global Reputation & Rankings: Prof. Shirley Chong, Chief Communications and Global Affairs Officer at CityUHK, chaired an interactive ranking workshop with Sunway deans and department heads to share strategies on internationalisation and global reputation building.
Exploration of Sunway’s Research Ecosystem
During the visit, the CityUHK delegation toured key academic, scientific, and healthcare facilities across the Sunway ecosystem. The itinerary highlighted Sunway’s interdisciplinary approach to innovation, featuring stops at Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway Sanctuary, and the Faculty of Medical and Life Sciences—where delegates inspected the Sunway Centre for Planetary Health, Biomedical Laboratory, and Psychology Laboratory. The delegation also explored the Faculty of Engineering and Technology’s Net Zero Building and Future Cities Research Institute (FCRI), the Sunway Business School Trading Room, and Media City alongside the Sunway Centre for Digital Humanities and Cultural Heritage.
The engagement concluded with an evening dinner at Andaman Seafood & Dim Sum in Sunway Resort Hotel, hosted by Sunway Group Founder and Chancellor Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah KBE AO and Sunway Education Group CEO Prof. Datuk Elizabeth Lee. By combining collaborative research, knowledge transfer, and strategic internationalisation, Sunway University and CityUHK are laying the foundation for long-term regional partnerships designed to address global and societal challenges.
