SDGs at Sunway University

The sustainability initiatives of Sunway University predate the adoption of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015.

Good Health and Well Being

This 3rd Sustainable Development Goal (SDG3) aims at globally improving everyone’s health and well-being in the world, no matter their level of income, age, race, gender etc. According to the UN, despite significant strides made in increasing global life expectancy, inequalities in healthcare access still exist.

This SDG focuses on ensuring a clean and stable water supply and effective water sanitation for all people by the year 2030. The goal is a reaction to the fact that many people throughout the world lack these basic services.

Affordable and Clean Energy

The world is making progress towards Goal 7, with encouraging signs that energy is becoming more sustainable and widely available. Access to electricity in poorer countries has begun to accelerate, energy efficiency continues to improve, and renewable energy is making impressive gains in the electricity sector.

Decent Work and Economic Growth

The SDGs promote sustained economic growth, higher levels of productivity and technological innovation. Encouraging entrepreneurship and job creation are key to this, as are effective measures to eradicate forced labour, slavery and human trafficking. With these targets in mind, the goal is to achieve full and productive employment, and decent work, for all women and men by 2030.

Making cities sustainable means creating career and business opportunities, safe and affordable housing, and building resilient societies and economies. It involves investment in public transport, creating green public spaces, and improving urban planning and management in participatory and inclusive ways.

The SDGs can only be realized with strong global partnerships and cooperation.The world is more interconnected than ever. Improving access to technology and knowledge is an important way to share ideas and foster innovation. Coordinating policies to help developing countries manage their debt, as well as promoting investment for the least developed, is vital for sustainable growth and development.

Sunway University Takes A Leading Role in Sustainable Development

Environmental Sustainability is indelibly ingrained in the DNA of Sunway University. The university is part of an academic complex that is located on the rim of what was once a barren hole in an area of mined-out wasteland. Today, this rehabilitated mining hole is the centre of Sunway City, a smart, digital city that has expanded by adopting sustainable urbanization practices.

Sunway University is dedicated to championing sustainability efforts within and around the campus by instilling sustainable practices into the various aspects of the university experience such as ensuring high standards in sustainability research, sustainable work practices and sustainable consumption.

The University is in the pursuit of nurturing a community of socially and ecologically responsible individuals who inturn are creating an impact within the wider community within the broader context of sustainable cities and communities. Sunway University has assumed a pioneering role not only in managing resources but also in supporting the government in realising the United Nation’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs). In accordance with that, The Sunway Smart Sustainable Campus Committee (SSCC) was set up in 2017 to brainstorm, innovate and make recommendations to guide campus-wide policies and initiatives.
