Mending Broken Hearts

It has been 50 years since the first human heart transplant was performed by Dr Christiaan Barnard at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town. Professor John Wallwork who performed the world’s first heart-lung and liver transplant with Professor Sir Roy Calne, will share his over 30 years’ experience at Papworth Hospital, Cambridge.
In this lecture, Professor Wallwork will speak on:
- The developments and progress of heart and lung transplants
- The continued shortfall in donor organ supply which is one of the challenges that remain in carrying out successful transplants
- Addressing the challenge, a major innovation involving non-beating heart donors (DCD) is taking place which will enhance the pool worldwide
