Climate Change and Unique Challenges to Pacific Island Countries

The challenges of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in the face of climate change are well-documented. Some challenges derive from their geophysical nature, including small land mass, low elevation and high exposure to climate-related disasters. Others are interlinked with development challenges posed by the global economic system. These countries are charting a new course to sustainability and prosperity that is compatible with their unique situations. The Republic of Nauru has been at the forefront of this effort. Nauru led a coalition of 39 nations in the Paris Agreement negotiations, and has been a vocal advocate for addressing the security implications of climate change.

His Excellency the Honourable Baron Waqa, President of the Republic of Nauru, will share his country's domestic efforts to respond to climate change, as well as his efforts to change the global conversation so that international efforts are more responsive to the needs of SIDS.
