In July 2018, I arrived in Malaysia for the first time to study Grade 12 in Sunway International School (SIS). The school is an Ontario, Canada School curriculum following Canada education system in Ontario so it is different from the traditional high school education system in China. The first month was challenging for both study and adapting to daily life. However, all the teachers and my classmates in SIS helped me actively. I lived in SIS House and participated in the activities organised by wardens. Very quickly the activities had introduced to me the culture of Malaysia, customs, the lifestyle, weather and the traditions of Malaysia. I found myself adapting to SIS and living in Malaysia a lot better and easier. Because English is a second language, teachers are very kind and will patiently explain difficult knowledge points to me over and over again. They used different teaching methods and interesting teaching modes to help me adapt to the learning of English better and faster.

The one year that I have spent in SIS has laid a solid foundation for my studies and university life at Sunway University. When I studied English in China, I was taught to remember the meaning of words but could not apply them in my life. In SIS, we are encouraged to speak the English language and I tried to take the initiative to speak English with others. With the help of my teachers and classmates, me English has improved.

I also had subjects like Accounting, Finance, Calculus, Data Statistics and Business Management Foundation which helps make it clear for me my area of interest and major I would choose in Sunway University.

I am now studying BSc (Hons) in Accounting and Finance and have fully adapted to life and study in Malaysia. In the first year of my university, I learned Malay and became more and more accustomed to such a multicultural life. I regard this experience as an inspiration that I will never give up no matter how many difficulties and setbacks I may encounter in my future life. Nowadays, I can't wait and look forward to start my study and life in the new school year.

I moved from Papua New Guinea to Malaysia in 2019 for Grade 11 in Sunway International School (SIS). The feeling of joining a new school in a new country can be a little overwhelming. Thankfully, I was welcomed by SIS House guardians, Ms Alnissia and Mr Foo, along with other boarders who were so welcoming and warm. Instantly I felt comfortable and part of the community. It was easy making friends at SIS House and it made first day of school an easy transition. On Orientation Day, I was able to make more friends from different countries whom are now my best friends. I really enjoyed learning in SIS as all my teachers were so kind and helpful, especially Mr Tam, my chemistry teacher. He was always readily available when I had questions about assignments. He would literally reply to my email in seconds – even on holiday breaks. In SIS, the teachers are all Canadian so it had helped improved my English by leaps and bounds. The diverse environment in SIS opened my eyes to different cultures of the world and I had made lifelong friendships from different parts of the world; such as Japan, Vietnam, Iran, South Korea, Senegal and China. It was truly an experience I will never forget.

After graduating Grade 11, I moved on to Sunway College to complete Grade 12 and that is the Canadian International Matriculation Program (CIMP). This transition is even easier having been in SIS for a year as all my friends moved on to CIMP as well. The application of transfer was made easy and simple by SIS and International Office. The college campus has a lot of students which contributed to its very lively atmosphere. I had no idea that I could be in a campus that was friendlier than SIS but CIMP exceeded my expectations and I made even more friends from more countries. My advanced functions teacher Mr Welch was so kind and really helped me to understand Mathematics in more detail. Ms Gagnon who teaches Chemistry is also very ready to help and has made the subject fun for me to learn as she is always so energetic and passionate. Being in Sunway and learning here has helped me learn a lot about different countries and learn different set of skills. It has helped to build my confidence, especially in communication. I am glad I have chosen CIMP and its Canadian curriculum as it will allow me to transfer to any university of my choice in the world.

From my first day in Sunway, I have always been impressed with the facilities on campus. It had something for everyone. From sports to extracurricular activities, the Grand piano at the main Sun-U foyer to the well-equipped and comfortable lecture theatres. Sunway really brought everything together for their students. And still they are renovating and refurbishing some parts of the campus every year. So, I am convinced and that is why I have always loved their continuous commitment to enhance student experience on campus.

It was my first time living abroad and away from my family and I am glad I chose Malaysia. It has helped me a lot for my self-growth living on my own. It has also given me so many learning opportunities and best of all, it has led me to friendships that turned in to families here. So, this will always feel like a second home to me.

The lecturers and academics have been a great support and inspiration to me. They were always open to help out and ready to answer all of our questions. Especially in my foundation year, the lecturers try their best to consider of possible cultural differences during lessons which really helped me a lot to understand the cultures of other nationalities.

The course outline and the subjects in my course were fairly diverse and very interesting. We have had assignments ranging from managing online community platform, doing self-assessment on behavioural change to conducting our own research and training. It brought us closer to our possible career options.

Accommodation was comfortable and near the campus – adding extra convenience for our late-night study sessions. It was prepared for us some essential pantry amenities to cook basic daily meals in our units. To make our stay even better, the staffs were friendly and generous with the maintenance assistance as well.

It is very safe in the campus. There’s CCTV installed everywhere and friendly security staff that we could always reach out to. We have a wide selection of restaurants and cafes nearby. Some are even available 24 hours. Sunway City is well known for all of its facilities, some even walking distance. We have malls, a hospital, theme park and readily available transportation for students and residents. I have never really felt the need to wander far off from Sunway City as we have everything here.

As a student of Sunway College, I got the opportunity to learn about multiple cultures and to exchange views with students from several countries. During my one-year programme at Sunway College, I had joined the Sunway International Student Ambassadors (SISA). Being a member of SISA made me feel like I have a family here in Malaysia.

As a CIMP student, I had the chance to volunteer at several events. It made me realise that helping others gave me a sense of happiness. I learned time management skills when I do community service. The skills have also taught me to balance my time to study and time for being with friends and family.

I made a lot of memories in Sunway College. I received a tonne of support from all my teachers and counsellors, especially from Ms Dzura and Ms Joan. My counsellors ensured that I chose the correct pathway for university. I look forward to continuing my undergrad in Malaysia.

It was a very meaningful period in my life for the two and a half years that I spent studying the program Diploma in Interior Design at Sunway University. Apart from the well-equipped facilities, there were also many learning opportunities that stimulated curiosity for students; such as art events, exhibitions, learning workshops and etc. I also feel that it was a friendly environment for students studying design for the first time. The contents of the lectures were very practical and composed to help prepare students to become work-ready in the industry.

Although there were many assignments and projects faced with some challenges, all the artworks that I have created at Sunway University were used as reference at job interviews. The creative activities were very useful to produce these artworks. While consulting with my lecturers who are still professional practitioners in the field with deep experience, I am confident and am able to have a clear visual of my bright future in this industry. I was able to learn from the basics of design and also enjoyed a fulfilling student life supported by the environment and people. Simply put, I am very satisfied.

As a student at Sunway International School, I was given an amazing opportunity to grow into a global citizen. With SIS offering a diverse range of learning and extracurricular activities I instantly fell in love with the school’s positive, friendly and academic environment. Never before I experienced such a close and spiritual connection with the school, teachers, friends and classmates.

However, Sunway International School was not just about getting comfortably accustomed to my new academic and social life. As a student, I was consistently encouraged and motivated by teachers to push beyond my comfort zones, challenge and express myself, and fully explore my capabilities. One occasion that very often comes to mind is my participation in the school’s orchestra band. I’ve never considered myself to be artistically talented, needless to say I used to get a stage fright just by making a presentation in class. Involvement in the band was a particularly valuable experience because it helped me overcome the little fears, stimulated creative growth, and developed my appreciation for music.

Cultural diversity was another major component that I loved during my stay at Sunway International School. Here, I’ve made lifelong friendships and met many wonderful people from various parts of the world. Diversity among the teaching staff was present just as much as it was among the students. I was really fortunate to learn from qualified and fully certified team of Canadian professionals, fantastic and dedicated teachers who provide guidance and get involved in all aspects of student’s life at SIS – making the learning environment enjoyable!

Sunway International School has given me valuable academic and communication skills which I continued to develop during my studies in CIMP (Canadian International Matriculation Programme). Personally, CIMP was a rich learning environment filled with extracurricular activities such as various sporting events, trekking trips, and the student council.

Following my stay at Sunway I moved to Brisbane, Australia in 2011, where I received an offer to study information technology and economics at the University of Queensland – one of the best and prestigious universities in the world.

When I look back on my years at SIS and CIMP, I realise that I've acquired an invaluable foundation essential for my future education and career.

In the summer of 2018, I was a proud student in Sunway University at the Department of Art and Design as an exchange student. I spent one semester and took a total of four classes: 'English Enhancement Academic Exchange', 'Interior Design', 'Digital Photography' and 'Digital Illustration'.

The classes in 'English Enhancement Academic Exchange' were basically classes where we could learn the English language, work ethics and adaptation living abroad.

Overall, we were very satisfied that the class consisted of only four exchange students, so the lecturer gets to pay full attention and carefully offered feedback they needed.

This subject was really good that I could not only learn English language but it includes some Business Communication syllabus where we learn how to compose a resume and how to do presentations in front of many audiences.

In Interior Design class, I felt it was very different from what I learn in Korea and was very impressed.

The lessons in my University in South Korea uses computer programs such as CAD and sketch-up to express their designs, while in Sunway University it was an eye-opening experience. We had to hand make work projects such as mock up models without using the help of CAD. It was an unfamiliar experience for me although it felt difficult at first but later I got used to it with the help of friendly classmates and lecturer.

It was interesting to see the whole process of making a mock up house that I had designed using materials of my choice. My interest grew over time as I find myself spending lots of time trying to better and improve the design in each assignment. I can still remember the feeling of accomplishment on the last day when I had to present my final assessment of the design I have prepared.

In the "Digital Photography" class, I was able to learn professional knowledge of cameras, how to take different pictures according to the subject, and the corresponding Photoshop techniques.

This class was very useful for me as someone who takes photos as a hobby and it has taught me how to use the camera professionally.

Among them, the most memorable assignment is to take portraits. I took a lot of pictures of various models and it took me a long time to emphasize the focus of their eyes in photoshop.

The feedback I received at that time is now being used well to take pictures of people in Korea as well.

In the "Digital Illustration" class, two assignments were carried out: drawing still life using Gouache and creating images expressing Malaysian culture using Wacom tablet.

In fact, this subject is very new to me and everything I attempted in this class was my first time. Still life was drawn through professional stages and Wacom tablet was used. It was tough in the beginning, but soon after, I was able to fully adapt and complete the work because the lecturer and classmates were very helpful and willing to learn together. They helped me by teaching me the parts I didn't know.

Among the two tasks, I was most impressed with the task of creating an "Image of Malaysian Culture" using a tablet.

Of course, drawing with a tablet was a new experience and fun. However, it was way more fun when I had to research, learn and understand the culture in Malaysia to create a reference image.

The best thing about my one semester at Sunway University Department of Art and Design was that I met a lot of really kind and good people.

For someone like me who is new to the country and campus environment where everything is unfamiliar, my friends, the staff and lecturers approached me first. They welcomed me and talked to me to help me in class, and helped me adapt to the class naturally.

Also, I could learn about various cultures and how to interact with each other that I had never known before.

Until now, I'm still doing well and keeping in touch with my friends who I had met in Malaysia and communicating with each other by message or call.

Above all, thanks to them, half a year in Malaysia has become a happy memory that I will never forget.

Finally, my time in Sunway University Department of Art and Design has given me a valuable experience to broaden my horizons about design, respect and learn about different cultures, and make friends with good people.

Why did I choose BSc International Business at Sunway University?
After completing A-Levels in Mauritius, choosing the right university was an uphill struggle, until I stumbled upon Sunway University. Among Malaysian universities, Sunway University is the only one having accreditation from Lancaster University, which is one of the Top 10 universities in the UK. In addition, Sunway University Business School (SUBS) is well known for its excellence in business education. The International Business degree is structured to allow students to gain an international perspective of challenges that businesses face and how to solve those using global economics theory, financial learnings and cultural knowledge. The Programme also entails key management and leadership skills within and beyond international boundaries, which will be valuable for my future career.

What do I enjoy about the Programme and the University environment?
Most of the subjects that I have done in my first year had group assignments that have allowed me to bond with Malaysian and International students from multiple cultural backgrounds. I find this a crucial aspect for International Business students due to the existence of cultural sensitivity globally. The diversity on campus molds a sense of community within students and staff. Moreover, my previous and current lecturers at Sunway University are the most dedicated and passionate individuals that have incontestably shared their educational expertise throughout the course of their subjects. With the shift of classes to online platforms, due to the coronavirus pandemic, our current Programme Leader, Dr. Shehnaz Tehseen, and the International Office constantly endeavor to uplift students and attend to our enquiries as constructively as possible.

Furthermore, there are diverse extracurricular activities for all students under various clubs and societies which are monitored by the Student Life Department. Being an active member of Sunway Student Volunteers, I get the opportunity to participate in various events, supporting the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that Sunway University thrives for, in global partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). To add on, having excelled academically, I was recommended as a Peer Leader by my lecturer for the Peer Assisted Leaning Programme (PALP) – a peer facilitated student support scheme for SUBS. These extracurricular activities are unequivocally shaping my interpersonal, networking, leadership and time-management skills.

Although, exigent and rigorous at times, I am assured that the curriculum will reward me with a breadth of in-depth knowledge and experiences that I will be able to leverage professionally.

I have never been outside of Korea till when I was 17 and you can imagine how small the world was to me.

In 2011, I was lucky to join the exchange student program in Sunway International School(SIS) and become the first exchange student in SIS. It was only one-year exchanging program, however, it was more than enough to make me fall in love with Sunway. At that time, no one taught me how the things will be in Malaysia. So as a person who doesn’t have any background information about the new environment, I was scared when I first arrived in Malaysia. But within a second, I wasn’t scared at all. Sunway welcomed me with such a great hospitality and made sure that I settle into the new environment.

That one year, not only gave me a chance to study in a different way compared to Korean education system but also gave me a chance to open my eyes to myself and the world. Malaysia has unique multi-culture that we don’t have in Korea. Looking at the people from different environment sharing ideas and bring out the new culture inspired me in many ways. As I joined Foundation In Arts program in Sunway college to continue my study, I learned not only about the subjects that taught in class, but also other things that we need to know as a global citizen. Sunway helped me to look at the things differently and think differently. My world is so much bigger compared to a few years ago, and I can’t wait for my world to get even bigger than now.
