Sunway University Graduation Ceremony – January 2019

Sunway University held its award and graduation ceremony in January with 900 students graduating from its various schools; Sunway University Business School (SUBS), School of Arts, School of Healthcare and Medical Sciences, School of Hospitality, School of Mathematical Sciences, and School of Science and Technology.

Graduates of the Sunway University Business School received their scrolls in the morning session with valedictorian Chloe Tee Tze Ling from the BSc (Hons) Accounting and Finance. Chloe is currently attached with Axiata under its Graduate Programme.

Graduates of the School of Arts, School of Healthcare and Medical Sciences, School of Hospitality, School of Mathematical Sciences, and School of Science and Technology received their scrolls in the afternoon session. Sunway University graduates received their scrolls from Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah and Pro-Chancellor, Dato’ Sri Idris Jala.

First graduating cohort of the BSc (Hons) Information Systems (Business Analytics) with Associate Professor Dr Angela Lee Siew Hoong, Programme Chair

The School of Science and Technology saw the very first cohort of graduates from the BSc (Hons) Information Systems (Business Analytics). 11 graduates, 5 with first class honours took to the stage to receive their scrolls. Valedictorian for the afternoon session was Nicholas Chan Khin Wai, who graduated with first class honours from the BSc (Hons) Information Systems (Business Analytics) is currently pursuing his MSc in Information Systems at Sunway University. 

Representing the University of Lancaster on behalf of its Chancellor to award the graduating class with scrolls were University of Lancaster’s Pro-Vice Chancellor, Professor Stephen Decent and Pro-Vice Chancellor of Engagement, Professor Dame Sue Black. Other representatives from Lancaster, are faculty members, Dr Phillip Benachour (Faculty of Science and Technology), Dr Stephen Roberts (Faculty of Health and Medicine) and Professor Mark Stevenson (Lancaster University Management School). Le Cordon Bleu’s Chief Executive Officer, Derrick Casey from Australia presented the scrolls on behalf of the culinary institution.

The ceremony also recognised 27 students with the Jeffrey Cheah Scholastic Awards at the ceremony. The Jeffrey Cheah Scholastic Award is awarded to students who have achieved outstanding results in their individual academic programme at the end of their course in Sunway University. Recipients of the award received a Scholastic Award Certificate and RM 2,000 in cash.

At a separate ceremony, Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Dr Teh Hong Piow, Founder, Chairman Emeritus, Director and Adviser of Public Bank was conferred with the Doctor of the University honoris causa by Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah AO for his outstanding contribution to the growth the country’s financial services industry.
