SMLS Holds Generation Endgame Debate
In conjunction with World No Tobacco Day, Sunway University hosted a dynamic debate and panel discussion focusing on the removal of the Generation Endgame (GEG) provision from the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health 2023 Bill. Chaired by Shireen Ali, the event featured debaters from Sunway University, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), and Universiti Malaya.
The debate highlighted various perspectives on the public health benefits promised by the GEG provision, concerns over its removal, and issues related to personal freedoms and the potential rise in the illicit tobacco trade. One striking statistic emphasised was that Malaysia loses 27,000 lives annually due to tobacco use.
Moderated by Raahilah Essa, a PhD candidate in Medical Sciences at Sunway University, the expert panel included Professor Anand Sachithanandan from Lung Cancer Network Malaysia (LCNM), Associate Prof Nur Amani Ahmad Tajuddin from University Malaya, and Associate Prof Murallitharan Munisamy from the National Cancer Society Malaysia. They provided insights into the parliamentary debate surrounding the Smoking Bill and discussed the complexities of addressing Malaysia's smoking epidemic effectively.
The audience's reaction was palpable, particularly during the revelation that our pets can also be victims of second-hand smoke. A significant 72% of attendees expressed their support for retaining the GEG provision, underscoring the impact of informed discussion and diverse viewpoints in shaping public opinion and policy.
We extend our gratitude to all participants and volunteers whose contributions made this event a success.
