Student Council Townhall 1.0: Empowering the Student Voice
The Sunway University Student Council (SUSC) and Sunway University College Council (SCC) recently hosted Townhall 1.0 Term 2025/2026, a key engagement session aimed at fostering transparency and strengthening communication between students and University management. The event saw a diverse turnout, attended by student representatives from various clubs and societies, student leadership bodies, and the general student population. It served as a platform where students could voice their concerns live, allowing us to provide direct updates on policy changes and address ongoing academic and campus issues.
A major focus of the session was the welfare of our international community. Management confirmed that the visa renewal backlog in Shah Alam has been completely resolved, ensuring no further delays for students. To improve the experience further, the International Office has implemented a new ticketing system and display screen to significantly reduce waiting times. Additionally, the Council addressed safety concerns for international students, highlighting the 24/7 support available through the International Office hotline, and the security office.
Campus life and facilities were also at the forefront of the discussion. Many students expressed concerns regarding the "too happening" nature of the campus, where frequent events combined with current library renovations have led to a shortage of study spaces In response, the Council has initiated discussions with University management to designate selected auditoriums as quiet study areas during daytime hours.
The Townhall 1.0 provided an opportunity to look toward future academic and professional developments. While there is currently no formal policy regarding AI use in team-based assignments, the University is planning workshops to gather student perspectives and promote ethical AI practices. The Council also touched on the topic of potentially controversial events, explaining that current rejections are based on the University’s goal to foster mutual respect across diverse cultures, though discussions with management for future considerations are ongoing.
Finally, the session addressed student recognition and internal operations. While a formal Dean’s List ceremony was deemed unfeasible due to the high frequency and volume of achieving students, we encourage everyone to celebrate their hard work on professional platforms like LinkedIn.
As we move forward, the Student Council remains dedicated to turning your feedback into concrete action. The Council extends its appreciation to student leaders, task forces, and all individuals who participated in the dialogue. Continued student engagement remains a driving force behind the ongoing development of Sunway University.
