Unlocking Machine Learning for Everyone "Zero to AI Hero" Workshop at Sunway University

Sunway University, in collaboration with Cardiff University, launched the "Zero to AI Hero" workshop, a hands-on initiative designed to introduce core machine learning (ML) concepts to individuals with no prior background in computing or information technology. The workshop is part of a larger project funded by the British Council through the Going Global Partnership programme. The participants were early-career researchers and scientists with diverse perspectives and backgrounds.

This three-day workshop marked the first milestone of an ongoing partnership between the two universities. The primary objective was to democratise access to machine learning by utilising Orange Data Mining. This visual, no-code data analysis tool enabled them to grasp complex concepts without requiring programming skills. Participants were guided through foundational machine learning (ML) techniques to foster a practical understanding and application in their respective fields. The goal is for the participants to apply the knowledge and skills gained to enrich their career trajectories and embrace dynamic and cross-disciplinary dialogue.

Puteri Nur Marissa from the British Council Malaysia presented certificates to all participants who successfully completed the workshop.

The next phase of the project is the convening of an international forum on ‘AI for Sustainability’, which is planned to be held at Sunway University on the 27th of October 2025. The event is free and open to the public and we look forward to welcoming all of you. While details are still being finalised, the forum aims to serve as a platform for meaningful dialogue on how artificial intelligence can contribute to solving global sustainability challenges.

The forum will feature distinguished speakers from Sunway University, Cardiff University, industry, and policymakers, who will share insights on how AI technologies can drive sustainable development and responsible innovation.

The project aligns with Sunway University’s broader strategic direction, which includes introducing AI as a core subject across all degree programmes and the launching of the Bachelor’s and Masters degrees in Artificial Intelligence, with the first intake expected in September 2025.
