Experiential Learning in Oncology Nursing

Students from the Post Basic in Oncology Nursing (PBON) programme at Sunway University, accompanied by Senior Lecturer Ms Ho Sweet Lee, recently had the opportunity to visit Amanita, a social enterprise established in 2005.

Founded to address the need for specialised products and supportive services for women living with breast cancer, Amanita provides care in an environment that prioritises dignity, discretion, and compassion. The visit offered students valuable exposure to post-mastectomy care solutions, including breast prostheses, specialised bras, and supportive accessories designed to restore comfort, confidence, and body image.

Beyond product knowledge, the experience deepened students’ understanding of the psychosocial impact of breast cancer, the importance of sensitive communication, and the role of community partnerships in delivering holistic oncology care. It also highlighted how social enterprises contribute meaningfully to survivorship support.

Experiential learning opportunities such as this play a vital role in strengthening students’ competencies in delivering compassionate, patient-centred oncology nursing care.

The faculty extends its appreciation to the Amanita team for their warm hospitality and meaningful sharing.
