Hana Tang Yi Hui, Tan Wen Zhe (Nathan) and Daphne Ng Hui Qi Win 1st Runner-Up at the Monash University's Think Beyond The Prompt: AI x Human Business Challenge 2026
Congratulations to Hana Tang Yi Hui (Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Artificial Intelligence), Tan Wen Zhe. Nathan (Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Computer Science) and Daphne Ng Hui Qi (Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Accounting and Finance) on Winning 1st Runner-Up at the Monash University's Think Beyond The Prompt: AI x Human Business Challenge 2026.
The competition brought together 70 participants across 24 teams from five universities: Monash University Malaysia, Universiti Malaya (UM), Sunway University, Taylor's University, and Asia Pacific University (APU). Participants were challenged to solve a real-world business case by demonstrating how human intelligence and artificial intelligence can work together to develop effective business solutions.
Competing independently without lecturer or mentor support, the Sunway University team overcame significant challenges from the outset. After securing their final team member at the last minute and gaining entry after registration had already closed, they navigated an intense competition environment that demanded rapid analysis, strategic thinking, and effective use of AI tools.
The team successfully analysed a complex business case involving growth, profitability, customer acquisition, and market segmentation. Rather than relying solely on AI-generated solutions, they used multiple AI models to validate ideas, refine strategies, and generate visual content, while ensuring that critical thinking and decision-making remained firmly within the team. Their approach reflected one of the competition's core messages: AI is most valuable when it enhances human judgement rather than replaces it.
Following their selection as finalists, the team was unexpectedly chosen to present first, leaving them with only five minutes to prepare for their final pitch. Despite the pressure, they delivered a compelling presentation and secured 1st Runner-Up, an achievement that exceeded their own expectations. The students credited their success to the complementary strengths within the team, combining finance, technical, and AI expertise.
The event also featured an industry panel comprising leaders from Maybank, Microsoft, EY-Parthenon, Experian, and PETRONAS, who shared valuable insights on AI adoption, future workplace skills, responsible data usage, and the importance of human-centred problem-solving in an increasingly AI-driven world.
Reflecting on the experience, the students highlighted the importance of teamwork, time management, and maintaining ownership of ideas while leveraging AI as a powerful support tool. They also valued the opportunity to network with fellow participants and industry representatives.
