Sunway University and IJSU Launch Landmark Academic Collaboration and AI Laboratory Partnership

Sunway University hosted the official launch of a postgraduate degree collaboration with Imam Ja'afar Al-Sadiq University (IJSU), Iraq, on 26 August 2026. The strategic alliance establishes a joint Master in Data Science pathway and sets up a new Joint AI Laboratory to advance scientific research and technological development between Malaysia and Iraq.

Key Highlights of the Collaboration

Data Science Pathway: Integrated with Sunway University's accredited Open and Distance Learning (ODL) Master in Data Science, the blended-learning program enables successful students to receive a degree from both Sunway University and IJSU.
Joint AI Laboratory: The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) establishes a collaborative laboratory dedicated to cutting-edge research, technological innovation, and joint research in artificial intelligence and modern technologies.
Bilateral Knowledge Exchange: Prepared over a two-year coordination phase, this initiative broadens access to international postgraduate education and fosters researcher exchanges across both nations.

High-Level Diplomatic and Institutional Engagement

The ceremony was hosted by Sunway University President Prof. Sibrandes Poppema and Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost Prof. Abhi Veerakumarasivam, alongside academic colleagues from the Faculty of Engineering and Technology. The visiting Iraqi academic delegation was led by IJSU Owner and Vice-Chancellor Dr Faris Mihna, accompanied by representatives from the Iraqi Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.

Distinguished diplomatic guests from the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq included Chargé d’Affaires a.i. Dr Hudayfa Zead Mahmoud, Counsellor Ahmed Ghanim Al Jburi, and Cultural Attaché Dr AbdulJaleel Muhammad Majeed. Special appreciation was extended to Dr Salah M. Khaleel for his key role in guiding the partnership to operational fruition.

The collaboration represents a qualitative step forward in internationalising higher education and expanding transnational research capabilities. By leveraging shared expertise in artificial intelligence, data science, and digital innovation, Sunway University and IJSU are building a resilient academic bridge that provides transformative opportunities for postgraduate students, academics, and researchers across both regions.
