Sunway University Strengthens Educational Partnerships with Macao Institutions

Sunway University hosted a series of high-level delegations from the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) in September 2026, culminating in the formalisation of strategic partnerships with premier Macao institutions to advance student mobility, joint research, and regional knowledge exchange.

Key Strategic Engagements

During the delegation visits, executive leadership established key priority areas to deepen cross-border academic cooperation:

• Government Alignment with DSEDJ (2 Sept 2026): Discussions with Mr Carlos Roberto Xavier, Head of the Department of Tertiary Education at the Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ), focused on institutional planning, internationalisation, talent recruitment, and opportunities within the Macao-Hengqin International Education Town.

• Expanded Partnership with UTM (3 Sept 2026): Engagements with Macao University of Tourism (UTM) Rector Dr Vong Chuk Kwan built upon an established partnership with Sunway University's School of Hospitality and Tourism Management to widen student mobility and future academic pathways.

• New Institutional Alliance with MPU (4 Sept 2026): Preliminary meetings with Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) Rector Prof. Zhou Zhongrong established a foundation for collaborative teaching, faculty exchanges, and joint scientific research.

Landmark MOU Signing at "Study in Macao" Education Fair 2026

The engagements culminated at the "Study in Macao" Education Fair 2026 in Kuala Lumpur, where Sunway University President Prof. Sibrandes Poppema officially signed Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with both UTM Rector Dr Vong Chuk Kwan and MPU Rector Prof. Zhou Zhongrong. The agreement provides a formal framework for long-term faculty exchanges, joint research initiatives, and student mobility programmes.

Organised by DSEDJ, the education fair attracted over 1,000 visitors and was officiated by Mr Sam Hou Fai, Chief Executive of the Macao SAR, and Mr Ouyang Yujing, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People's Republic of China to Malaysia.

These milestone agreements reinforce Sunway University's position as a globally connected gateway in Southeast Asia, driving educational innovation, talent development, and high-impact research collaboration across the region.
