The book launch of Sunway University Press’ Expect the Unexpected: A Compilation of Common Clinical Cases Posing as Diagnostic Dilemmas was a grand celebration of academic excellence and a milestone in advancing medical literature.
Collaboration for Impact
In collaboration with the Academy of Family Physicians of Malaysia, Universiti Malaya and DocQuity, Sunway University Press held the launch on 18 November 2023 at the prestigious Seri Pacific Hotel Kuala Lumpur. The event was beyond a mere introduction to the book—it was a collective effort to advance knowledge in primary care medicine and contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3, ensuring healthy lives and well-being for all.

Expect the Unexpected was penned by Prof Datin Dr Chia Yook Chin, Head of the Department of Medical Sciences at Sunway University, and Dr Ng Wei Leik, a distinguished family physician from Universiti Malaya. The book delves into commonly encountered scenarios in medical practice, where each case is presented as a compelling narrative with a meticulous examination of the diagnostic complexities. The book provides practical takeaways that foster critical thinking and instil empathy and compassion for patients, suited not only for seasoned medical professionals but also aspiring medical students, interns and trainees.

The book launch unfolded seamlessly at the helm of Associate Prof Dr Adina Abdullah, Head of the Department of Primary Care Medicine at Universiti Malaya, who served as the emcee. Distinguished guests added their presence to the event, notably the guest of honour Toh Puan Dato’ Seri Hjh Dr Aishah Ong, Pro-Chancellor of Universiti Malaya and Member of the Board of Trustees, Jeffrey Cheah Foundation.
Toh Puan began the book launch with an engaging speech, in which she honoured the authors Prof Chia and Dr Ng, and applauded the book’s core message: “It is a compelling call to revisit the fundamentals, to listen to our patients attentively, and to approach diagnoses with humility and open minds.”
Toh Poh graced the stage as she officially launched the book, alongside the authors Prof Chia and Dr Ng, Prof Sibrandes Poppema (President of Sunway University), Prof Abhimanyu Veerakumarasivam (Provost of Sunway University) and other distinguished guests.
The event ended with a riveting speech by Prof Chia and also Dr Ng, who joined the event via Zoom. With anecdotes, humour and profound insights, the authors offered a glimpse into the depth of Expect the Unexpected, leaving the audience inspired.
