Research Centre for Carbon Dioxide Capture and Utilisation, Sunway University
The Research Centre for Carbon Dioxide Capture and Utilisation (CCDCU) at Sunway University is committed to developing innovative solutions for reducing CO₂ emissions and converting captured carbon into valuable products. Established in 2018 under the leadership of Professor Mohamed Kheireddine Aroua, the centre plays a key role in advancing research that supports global sustainability goals, particularly in climate action (SDG 13), clean energy (SDG 7), and industrial innovation (SDG 9).
CCDCU aims to be a global leader in research on carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) by developing cutting-edge technologies that support a net-zero carbon future. Its mission includes:
- Conducting high-impact research on CO₂ capture and its conversion into fuels, chemicals, and other sustainable materials.
- Training researchers and professionals through postgraduate supervision, workshops, and skill development programs.
- Collaborating with local and international institutions to accelerate research impact.
- Providing consultancy services to industries for decarbonisation and sustainable practices.
Key Research Activities
The centre focuses on:
- Innovative CO₂ capture technologies – Developing efficient methods for absorbing and storing carbon emissions.
- Conversion of CO₂ into valuable products – Exploring chemical and electrochemical processes to transform CO₂ into fuels, polymers, and industrial chemicals.
- Industry-focused solutions – Partnering with businesses to integrate carbon capture into existing processes.
- Publishing in leading scientific journals and presenting research at international conferences.
