Sunway University Press Launches "The Anatomy of Online Communities"

On 3 August 2026, Sunway University Press launched The Anatomy of Online Communities, a timely new book co-authored by Sunway University’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) academics, Professor Bradley C. Freeman and Associate Professor Dr. Zuhaili Akmal Ismail.

Hosted at The Sunway Library by BookXcess, the event explored the intersection of digital sociology and platform governance. The book examines how online communities form, their societal influence, and the critical challenges surrounding misinformation and online power.

A major highlight was the panel discussion, "Power, Regulation, and the Future of Online Communities." Moderated by Joy Chua of TEAMO Co., the authors were joined by Mediha Mahmood, CEO of the Communications and Multimedia Content Forum. Together, they discussed where online communities are headed and who shapes the rules that govern them.

The launch welcomed students, industry professionals, and distinguished leadership, including Professor Dato' Elizabeth Lee, Group CEO of Sunway Education Group; Provost Professor Abhi Veerakumarasivam; Pro Vice-Chancellors Professor Chai Lay Ching and Professor Mahendhiran Sanggaran Nair; and FASS Dean Professor Mayco A. Santaella.

The Anatomy of Online Communities is an essential resource for those navigating digital regulation and community building. This milestone reflects Sunway University Press’s mission to transform impactful academic research into meaningful conversations that connect people.
