Carbon Reduction and Emission Reduction Process
SDG 7.2.3
In alignment with the University’s Sustainability Policy, which affirms that “The University will support the broader Sunway Group’s goal of reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 20% by 2030 through energy conservation, sustainable design, and operational efficiency”, Sunway University has established a structured process for carbon management and reducing carbon dioxide emissions. Since 2018, a series of targeted initiatives have been implemented to operationalize this commitment, focusing on energy use, waste diversion, and sustainable commuting.
The following table provides a structured overview of these actions, mapped against greenhouse gas (GHG) emission scopes and their specific contributions to reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
Initiative | GHG Scope | Carbon Management Contribution |
District cooling system (centralised water cooling) | Scope 1 Scope 2 | Reduces electricity use for air-conditioning; improves energy & water efficiency, lowering emissions. |
Non-HFC units & refrigerators | Scope 1 | Avoid high-GWP refrigerants, preventing direct CO2 emissions from leaks. |
Solar panel installation (renewable energy) | Scope 2 | Offsets purchased grid electricity with renewable energy, directly reducing CO2 emissions. |
iLAB - virtual computer lab | Reduces electricity demand from physical computer labs, lowering indirect energy emissions.
E-waste collection points | Scope 3 | Diverts electronic waste from landfill, avoiding emissions from improper disposal. |
Fabric recycling collection points | Diverts textile waste from landfill; reduces emissions from decomposition & disposal.
Composting of food waste | Prevents methane emissions by diverting organic waste from landfill.
Carpooling programme | Reduces commuting-related emissions by lowering number of single-driver trips.
Charged parking on campus | Encourages reduced vehicle travel into campus, lowering transport-related GHG emissions.
Shuttle service within Bandar Sunway Township | Consolidates multiple car trips into shared transport, reducing commuting emissions. |
These initiatives collectively illustrate that Sunway University has a structured and ongoing process for carbon management and reducing carbon dioxide emissions across energy, waste, and mobility operations. The effectiveness of this process is further demonstrated through measurable outcomes; in 2024, the University achieved a 10% decrease in its overall carbon footprint compared to the baseline year. This reduction highlights the tangible impact of the initiatives outlined above and reinforces the University’s commitment to continuous improvement in carbon management and emission reduction.
