Local Community Outreach for Energy Efficiency

SDG 7.4.1

Sunway University, widely recognized as a #CampuswithAConscience, is deeply committed to integrating the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) into its daily operations. As part of this commitment, the University actively promotes energy efficiency and clean energy adoption across campus, embedding sustainability into both infrastructure and community practices.

In 2024, the University implemented a series of community-based initiatives to enhance safety, accessibility, and sustainability at low-cost residential flats of Desa Mentari. These projects focused on the installation of solar-powered lighting solutions, addressing both immediate community needs and broader environmental goals.

Project 1: Solar Lighting in Parking Area and Glow-in-the-Dark Staircase Markings

The first initiative involved the installation of solar-powered lights in the motorcycle parking area, significantly improving nighttime visibility and deterring potential security risks. Complementing this, glow-in-the-dark tape was applied along the staircases of a 11-storey residential block to provide clear directional guidance. These measures reduced the likelihood of accidents, particularly for children and the elderly, while simultaneously promoting environmentally friendly and cost-effective solutions that required no additional electricity. In addition to these physical improvements, an awareness session was also conducted with residents to strengthen their understanding of energy efficiency and clean energy practices. This ensured that the project contributed not only to immediate safety but also to long-term sustainability awareness.

Project 2: Motion-Sensor Solar Lighting in Staircases

The second project centred on the installation of about 20 motion-sensor solar lights along the staircases of the same 11-storey residential block to improve safety and accessibility. By automatically illuminating pathways, the lights reduced accident risks and enhanced security for residents, with special attention to vulnerable groups. The initiative directly benefited more than 400 residents of the block. As part of the project, awareness session was also held with residents to reinforce knowledge of clean energy and energy efficiency practices, enabling the community to connect the immediate benefits of the intervention with broader sustainability goals.

Together, these projects demonstrate how simple, eco-friendly interventions, coupled with educational outreach, can provide tangible and measurable benefits for community safety, well-being, and sustainability.
