Employment Practice Equivalent Rights Outsourcing
SDG 8.2.5
Sunway University has established a clear policy framework that guarantees equivalent rights for workers engaged through outsourcing activities and third-party contractual arrangements.
The University’s Human Rights Policy (created 2022) applies to “employees and associates,” with associates defined to include “vendors, suppliers, contractors, consultants and other third-party service providers.” This ensures that the Policy covers not only University staff but also outsourced workers. The Policy commits the University to uphold internationally recognised labour and human rights standards, including the prohibition of forced and child labour, support for freedom of association and collective bargaining, promotion of equality and non-discrimination, and the provision of a safe and healthy working environment. In this way, third-party workers are assured of rights equivalent to those of direct employees of the University.
Human Rights Policy (2022)
In parallel, the Sustainable Procurement Policy (2021, reviewed 2023) establishes labour and social responsibility requirements for all suppliers, contractors, and subcontractors. It requires suppliers to ensure fair and safe working conditions by providing wages in compliance with legal minimums, adhering to regulated working hours, prohibiting slavery, forced labour and child labour, supporting collective bargaining rights, and maintaining a non-discriminatory workplace. By applying these standards equally across its supply chain, the University ensures that outsourced workers and third-party service providers receive the same protections, rights, and standards as those extended to direct University employees.
Sustainable Procurement Policy (2021, reviewed 2023)
Together, these policies form a coherent governance framework that safeguards fair treatment, responsible labour practices, and equivalent rights across both direct employment and outsourced contractual relationships.
