Cancer: Challenges for The Future of Patient Care
The rising number and age of the global population are going to increase the number of cases of cancer and these individuals will require expensive and complex clinical care. This situation is unsustainable, therefore new approaches will be needed to address these critical issues. Scientific research has led to many advances in care and continues to provide more insights into the nature of these diseases. However, the availability of data from even an individual cancer cell is on a scale that increases the complexity of interpretation to glean new fundamental insights. Nevertheless, such insights are addressing key issues with respect to prediction of progression, likelihood of spread and even responsiveness to therapies. But when such fundamental data is aligned with linked patient data, the impact can be very significant. Novel techniques from computer imaging, robotics and molecular diagnostics, coupled with machine learning and neural networks will revolutionise the way patient care is managed. These approaches will also require wholesale changes in the system of delivery of patient care. Where, how, who by and what care will be delivered have to be questioned and extrapolated predictions for future needs have acquired particular importance.
