Inflammatory Diseases: Clinical Outcomes, Genes and Mosquitoes

Up to 10% of the population will suffer from an immune-mediated inflammatory disease at some stage during their life. Such diseases include multiple sclerosis, SLE, rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease. Modern genetics is increasingly uncovering the gene variants that put us at risk of disease, and we are discovering that these factors may arise as a result of infections such as malaria, explaining the ethnic differences seen in the frequency and severity of some of these diseases. Risk of getting a disease is one thing, but the course taken by a given autoimmune or inflammatory disease varies greatly between individuals.

In this lecture, Professor Smith will share their findings that the biology driving outcome was distinct from that driving specific diagnosis, can be measured, and is leading to new tests predicting clinical outcome entering the clinic.
