JSC-SDSN | The Look East Policy in Present Turbulent Times
The Look East Policy in Present Turbulent Times
9 Aug 2022, Tuesday | 4.00-5.30PM GMT+8 | Sunway University & Zoom
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Look East Policy (LEP). The Look East Policy had been significant to Malaysia and the Japan-Malaysia relationship and to Tun Dr Mahathir’s effort to carve a different path in foreign relations in the last decade of the Cold War. Although some claim that the policy is not relevant anymore, the significance of fundamental national concerns such as effective national human resource development will never be obsolete, which means that there is still a lot that Japan can contribute to dynamic and stable socio-economic development in Malaysia. In present turbulent times of rising anti-globalization sentiments, accelerating climate change, and emerging big power competition, Japanese-Malaysian cooperation will boost the common interests of Japan and Malaysia in enhancing future economic prosperity and strengthening continued regional harmony.
