Learning Mathematics in the L2 Classroom: Contribution of Domain-Specific and Domain-General Skills

The Department of Psychology invites you to a talk by a visiting lecturer, Dr Judith Wylie, from Queen's University Belfast, who will be speaking on "Learning Mathematics in the L2 Classroom: Contribution of Domain-Specific and Domain-General Skills"

Dr Judith Wylie’s research focuses on basic cognitive processes and their application within educational contexts. She is interested in the development of reading and mathematical abilities in typically developing children and children with atypical trajectories. Much of her research has been carried out in the Irish immersion educational context, and involves an international team of researchers in Canada, France and Chile where the focus is on the experience and development of children learning math in a second language. A further international collaboration with researchers in China, India and Hong Kong focuses on the development of children’s understanding of fractions. The linguistic experience of higher education students is reflected in her research on formulaic language in university students in Hong Kong, Japan, Malta and Russia.
