Public Private Collaborations in Tourism Disaster Management Planning: Indonesia's Major Destinations

Presentation Synopsis

This study aims to explore the relationships between public and private sectors in tourism disaster management and assess the criteria for the realization of public private collaborations in tourism disaster management in terms of their priorities. Methods include in-depth interviews, focus group discussions and an Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) survey. The study identifies six possible criteria for public private collaborations in tourism disaster management, namely the formation of special organization regulation for critical facilities in disaster management, tourism planning which considers disaster risk awareness, and tourism industry associations' enhanced role in improving disaster risk awareness. Through AHP surveys involving experts, it is found that there is a different level of disaster preparedness between regions and different priorities chosen by their stakeholders. Higher level of disaster preparedness and a more practical implementation of disaster management in one of the regions (Bali) is likely due to the influence of international market demand.

Speaker's Profile

Devi Kausar is an Associate Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Tourism, Universitas Pancasila, Jakarta. She has a PhD in International Development of Nagoya University - Japan, a Master's Degree in Tourism Management from Curtin University - Australia, and a Bachelor of Economics from Padjadjaran University - Indonesia. She also holds a Certified Hospitality Educator certification from the American Hotel and Lodging Educational Institute (AHLEI). Her research interests include cultural heritage tourism, sustainable tourism, rural development, and disaster risk reduction in tourism. In 2021, she was a Visiting Professor at Universitat de Girona, Spain under the Erasmus+ Mobility Awards Scheme. She has been involved in various projects in the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy - Republic of Indonesia, particularly in the field of rural tourism, tourism planning and tourism education.
