Sunway brings ISCEP teaching seminar to Malaysia for the first time!
Hosted by Sunway Medical Centre, Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences at Monash University Malaysia, Sunway University and the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, the 49th Ten-Day International Teaching Seminar on Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology and Prevention was held in Malaysia for the very first time. An independent NGO under the umbrella of the World Heart Federation, the International Society for Cardiovascular Epidemiology and Prevention (ISCEP) teaching seminars have been held in 38 different countries and nearly 2,000 Fellows have attended the past workshops in venues like Granada (2016) and Fiji (2015).
Datuk Dr Shahnaz Murad, Deputy Director-General (Research and Technical Support), Ministry of Health, Malaysia, accompanied by Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah AO, Founder and Chairman of Sunway Group, Founder and Trustee of Jeffrey Cheah Foundation and Chancellor of Sunway University, at the welcome dinner on Sunday, 4 June 2017 launched the seminar which started the day after and ended on 15 June at Sunway Medical Centre. Conducted by the ISCEP Faculty, the teaching seminar focuses on up-skilling physicians and researchers on cardiovascular disease.
This year’s seminar had 45 Fellows in the programme with participation from 28 countries including the United States, Belgium, Bangladesh, China, India, Japan, Fiji, South Korea, South Africa, Tanzania, Sudan, Sweden, Uganda, Nigeria, Nepal, Poland, Kyrgyz Republic, Mozambique, Denmark, Portugal, Kenya, Republic of Palau, Zimbabwe, Turkey, Ghana and Malaysia. Among the Fellows from Malaysia are staff and researchers from the Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway University, local Malaysian universities and hospitals, and the Ministry of Health Malaysia.
The Chair of the Council of ISCEP, Professor Neil Poulter in his opening speech thanked Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah AO and the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation for the extraordinary hospitality and encouraged the Faculty and Fellows to take the opportunity to network, foster close ties and form a learning community for the 12 days they are here at Sunway City.

Prabhakaran, Vice President, Research, Public Health Foundation of India and Executive Director of Centre for Chronic Disease Control in New Delhi, India; Steve Allender, Professor of Public Health and Co-Director, World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Obesity Prevention in Deakin University, Australia; Darwin Labarthe, Professor of Preventive Medicine, Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University, Chicago; David Goff, Director of Division of Cardiovascular Sciences, National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, United States; George Howard, Professor and Chair, Department of Biostatistics, School of Public Health, University of Alabama at Birmingham, Alabama; and Shrikant I Bangdiwala, Research Professor, Department of Biostatistics, Gillings School of Global Public Health, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, United States.
During the certificate presentation ceremony cum farewell dinner, Professor Kay-Tee Khaw acknowledged the tremendous contributions made by the host or local organising committee led by Professor Jarlath Ronayne, Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah Distinguished Professor, Sunway University. Among the attendees at the dinner were Professor Graeme Wilkinson, Vice-Chancellor of Sunway University; Mr Lau Beng Long, Managing Director, Sunway Group Healthcare Service; Professor Shajahan Yasin, Head of Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Monash University Malaysia; and Dato’ Dr Ahmad Faruok Musa from the Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Monash University Malaysia.
